Step 1: Define your Blog’s Purpose
If you want to start a blog is probably because you have a passion that you want to share. Even thought that having a passion is a great place to start, you cannot build a successful blog on just that. You need to have a purpose and turn that passion into valuable content.
Turn that passion into valuable content.
This is why the first step to starting your blog is defining what your blog is going to be about. As an example to follow I will use my own website Bloggers Meet Bloggers.
I started blogging a few years ago, on a website that no longer exist, where I talked about lifestyle and college. Then I realized that my passion was not college or lifestyle, but blogging (the actual act of blogging). I decided to start this blog, Bloggers Meet Bloggers, but before launching my blog I answered the following questions to make sure I had a purpose.
1. What do you want to blog about?
Example: I wanted to blog about blogging.
2. How can I make valuable content out of this?
Example: I can make trainings and coaching sessions to show people the BTS of having a blog and everything you need to know to grow a successful blog.
3. Who are you blogging for?
Example: My target reader is a blogger or someone who is looking to make their entrance into the blogging world.
With these three questions I discovered the purpose of my blog.
I wanted give resources for bloggers to grow online and I can do this by giving them educational videos, podcasts and blog posts.
Having a purpose will help you to keep your blog focused. Once you have the purpose of your blog is time to develop your mission statement.
Why should you have a Mission Statement?
A mission statement describes what your blog is about. Having a mission statement will help you keep the focus on your blog and it will also let the audience know what they should expect from you.
Here is a simple template that you can follow
Our company is where [audience x] finds [content y] for [benefit z]
This content mission statement was shared by Andy Crestodina in his book Content Chemistry, where he talks about content marketing. He defines Audience X as your target audience; content y as the topics and formats that you will publish; and benefit z as the benefits that your content offers to your audience.
You should definitely make your mission statement public. This is the promise that you are making to the readers. It’s also a way to let people know what your blog is all about.
Step 2: Naming your Blog
It’s time to have some fun. I think coming up with the name of your blog is the fun part of starting a blog. It’s time to be creative. Brainstorm a list of 5 to 6 names that you think will be a good fit with your content.
When coming up with a name for your blog, make sure you select a name with the following characteristics:
- Your blog’s name is aligned with your content
- Is easy to remember
- Won’t go out of style
- It’s available
If you found a name that satisfy the requirement above congrats you have a name!
If you can’t seem to settle on a name, go to a friend and let them help you decide. You can also go to our Facebook Community and ask other bloggers for opinions.
Step 3: Hosting your blog
When choosing a hosting website, you need to make sure that they offer a great price for a great deal. That’s why when it comes to hosting I always choose BlueHost.
BlueHost offers Free domain, you can install WordPress with just 1-click and they have amazing support 24/7 if you get stuck in the process (which I doubt you would because it’s really easy to use).
Let me show you step by step how easy is to set up your website with Bluehost.

3. Sign up with your new domain.
4. Create your account and choose you plan and select your package.
When selecting your account plan you can choose to pay a range of months in advanced. I recommend to choose the 36 months plan or the 60 months plan. This is the cheaper option. You will pay only $3.95 per month.
Below the Account plan I recommend you uncheck the following:
Site Backup Pro
Search Engine Jumpstart
Only keep the Domain Privacy Protection selected. This will keep your personal information from being shared.
5. Make your payment and Bluehost will automatically install WordPress for you. If this doesn’t happen then just click install in WordPress. Once you make your payment Bluehost will send you a confirmation email.
Just like that in 5 easy steps you will have your new blog using Bluehost.
Step 4: Blog Design and templates
WordPress has a lot of templates that you can use as a base to create your blog design, but because I know you want to stand out I don’t recommend using the templates that WordPress offers.
The layout of your blog is really important. Why? Because this is how people will remember you, by the design of your blog. You blog’s template is also what determines if a reader stays or leaves your website forever.
When it comes to your blog’s design you have two options. You can hire a graphic designer or buy already made templates. Because I know that a lot of my readers are just starting out and have a limited budget for their blogs, I would focus on finding already made templates.
There are a lot of places where you can buy, easy to install templates for your blog. If you just type in “Wordpress Templates” on Etsy you will find hundreds of amazing templates to choose from. Because I know this can be overwhelming, here are some things to keep in mind when buying a template for your blog:
- Make sure is easy to install
- Read the reviews
- Keep the background light and the fonts dark
- Check the live preview before purchasing
- Make sure it’s easy to navigate
- Make sure the designs goes with your brand and style
Usually these templates are easy to install and they have instructions. My favorite place to shop for templates is Pipdig. They have amazing designs and easy to follow instructions.
Step 5: Launch your Blog!
Yay You made it! Once you are ready to launch visit your dashboard in Worpress and select Bluehost:
You will encounter this message:
Click Launch and your blog will be up and running. Congrats you have a new blog up and running
Bonus Step: What’s Next?
You might be wondering what’s next? Of course you need to write new content for you blog, but how do you get readers to visit your site?
How do you make readers stay?
How can I make an income from my blog?
Why am I not getting traffic?
How can I use social media to promote my blog?
These are just some of the things that bloggers struggle with on the daily. Bloggers are constantly looking for ways to answer all of these questions, but you don’t have to do it alone. That’s where I come in.
